Next Generation 9-1-1
Building a Modern 9-1-1 System for All Californians
For more than 40 years, the 9-1-1 legacy system has served Californians well. But how people communicate has changed, as most emergency calls now come from smartphones. Updating the system allows 9-1-1 to better connect with today’s technology and better support first responders.
Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) is a modern emergency communications system designed for how Californians communicate today. It allows 9-1-1 centers to receive and share information – such as texts, photos, videos, and data – so responders can understand emergencies faster and act more effectively.
California is committed to building an NG9-1-1 system that works for everyone. Cal OES is working closely with public safety agencies statewide to modernize the 9-1-1 system while keeping it dependable at all times.
The goal of NG9-1-1 is simple: when someone needs help, their call gets through quickly, clearly, and reliably, no matter what device they’re using.
California has already made important upgrades to prepare for Next Generation 9-1-1. That work sets the stage for a system that is more resilient, more flexible, and better equipped to serve California communities now and into the future.
California Resumes Deployment of Next Generation 9-1-1 Statewide
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has executed a bridge contract with a statewide provider, formally resuming statewide deployment of NG9-1-1. This action allows us to protect public safety and support service to the legacy system while restoring momentum toward a modern, unified statewide NG 9-1-1 system. It also reinforces Cal OES’ ability to deliver a reliable emergency communications network with greater transparency, accountability, and statewide coordination. The bridge contract with Atos, the current NG9-1-1 statewide backup provider, stabilizes current operations and accelerates progress in priority areas, particularly the Los Angeles area, in advance of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.Â
Additional information about the statewide bridge contract will be posted here as it becomes available.Â
