August 2017 NIMS News:

"NEWS"   The 2017 NIMS Assessment has been emailed to the 58 counties and 20 State Agency points of contact and is due Friday, September 29th, 2017. This assessment is MS Excel based and supports the State's annual requirement for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The tool consists of sixteen questions. Cal OES will in turn compile Operational Area and State Agency information as a State NIMS aggregate and further populate the FEMA Unified Reporting Tool (URT) which is online. OAs may choose whether they wish to gather information from sub-jurisdictions. For more information, contact SharedMail_NIMS@CalOES.ca.gov. Cal OES continues to make contact with the Operational Areas to ensure the current points of contact have not changed. If your Operational Area/County has a change or a technical question, please be sure to contact us.

2016 NIMS Assessment

The 2016 Assessment: California had 100% participation from Operational Areas (OA) and reporting State Agencies in the required annual assessment. Cal OES will provide the 2017 assessment after FEMA releases in mid-August.

The 2016 Assessment was submitted on time. For more information, contact SharedMail_NIMS@CalOES.ca.gov. Cal OES is currently making contact with the Operational Areas to ensure the current points of contact have not changed. If your Operational Area/County has a change, please be sure to notify us.

What is the National Incident Management System (NIMS)?

The National Incident Management System (NIMS) provides a systematic, proactive approach to guide departments and agencies at all levels of government, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to work seamlessly to prevent, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents, regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity, in order to reduce the loss of life and property and harm to the environment. The State of California adopted NIMS on February 8, 2005, by Executive Order S-2-05.

NIMS Integration Planning and Reporting

The NIMS reporting tool is a MS Excel based self-assessment instrument developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and designed for the emergency management community for State, territorial, tribal, local governments to evaluate and report their jurisdiction's achievement of all NIMS implementation activities released since 2004. The NIMS Data Collection Tool was developed to assist the nation's emergency management community to comply with the NIMS requirements, as determined by the National Integration Center (NIC). HSPD-5 requires Federal Departments and agencies to make adoption of the NIMS by State and local organizations a condition for Federal preparedness assistance.
