The<br>training will allow students to develop the skills to coordinate a message once developed and to modify if problems or sources of confusion arise. It discusses techniques to develop strategic messaging in support of incident action plans, managing joint information centers including personnel and stress. The course is designed for people who work with the media in times of crisis and day-to-day media relations. The program emphasizes the importance of developing a Public Information Officer (PIO) team, communications skills, leadership and working in a Joint Information Center using Joint Information Systems.<br><br>Participants engage in public speaking exercises and media interview sessions. Classroom and breakout sessions are information intensive and are designed to help participants apply principles and techniques taught in the discussions. Participants will work with representatives from the media<br>and other agencies involved in crisis communications. This program is presented in cooperation with the California Hazardous Materials Investigator’s Association (CHMIA).<br><br>Participants learn the techniques involved in thoroughly investigating hazardous materials incidents including gathering evidence, interviewing, documenting the investigative progress, determining if potential criminal and/or civil violations have occurred, and the proper disposition of the investigator’s final work product.<br><br>Enrollment is limited to: Peace Officers, Environmental Health Officers/Specialists, Hazardous Materials Specialists of a Public Health or Environmental Health Agency or Fire Department, and employees of a Water or Air Pollution Control Agency whose duties are related to enforcement of environmental laws and regulations who are employed by the State of California, the Counties and Municipal Subdivisions of the State of California or Special Districts within the State of California.<br><br>Twenty-­four full scholarships are available.
